Steely Dan
Steely Dan is an influential American rock band formed in 1971 by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Originally based in New York before relocating to Los Angeles, the duo crafted a signature sound that fused rock, jazz, R&B, Latin influences, and advanced studio production, earning them a reputation as one of the most musically sophisticated acts of the 1970s. Rolling Stone famously described them as “the perfect musical antiheroes for the seventies.”
After beginning with a traditional band lineup, Becker and Fagen shifted in 1974 to a studio‑only approach, collaborating with top-tier session musicians to create polished, genre‑blending albums. Their debut, Can’t Buy a Thrill (1972), set the tone with hits built on intricate arrangements and ironic, enigmatic lyrics. The band reached its commercial and critical peak with the 1977 masterpiece Aja, widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Following their breakup in 1981, Steely Dan maintained a devoted cult following while Becker and Fagen pursued solo projects. The band reunited in 1993, returning to touring and releasing new material. Their 2000 album Two Against Nature won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, reaffirming their enduring influence. Their final studio album, Everything Must Go, arrived in 2003. After Walter Becker’s passing in 2017, Donald Fagen continued performing under the Steely Dan name.
With over 40 million albums sold worldwide, Steely Dan remains a cornerstone of American music. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, ranked No. 82 on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Musical Artists, and placed No. 15 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time.
